Three factors are considered when determining the duration of agile projects:

Project deadline
Project budget constraint
Functional completion rate
The high level requirements in the Product Roadmap and Product Backlog are sufficient for the creation of a general time schedule for the project. Detailed planning is done for each version and iteration.

Versions can be planned based on a specific trend or minimum functionality (MMF).
Versions can be planned according to the length of time required to achieve a specific feature set.
At Sprint planning meetings, the development team estimates the time (in hours) required to perform the tasks of the sprint requirements, other than determining the sprint coverage. Sprint backlog is used to track the use of detail time during sprint.
It is possible to summarize the main differences between plan-oriented approaches and adaptive approaches in terms of time management.

In plan-focused approaches, changes can be made to the project schedule based on fixed coverage, while in adaptive approaches, the project is not scoped at the beginning, time is fixed, and the development team develops the requirements in accordance with a specific time.
In Plan-Focused Approaches, the Project Manager constantly evaluates how much work the team can do during the project, during the project, during the adaptive approach, while creating the time plan depending on the needs gathered at the beginning of the project.

In plan-focused approaches, during the Project / Phase, the project team will work through all the requirements in one go; requirements collection, design, development, testing and commissioning. There is no difference between critical and optional requirements in terms of time planning. In adaptive approaches; agile teams work in the first place during the iterations to develop the highest requirements of priority and value.

In plan-centric approaches, the project team usually does not start until the product development needs are gathered and the design phases are completed. Agile teams start product development from the first iteration.

In plan-centered approaches, time variability is greater. In adaptive approaches, time-boxed iterations are defined.

In Plan-Focused Approaches, when the Project Manager is trying to estimate the duration of the product with minimum knowledge of the product – at the beginning of the project – when agile teams have more knowledge of the product as the project progresses, estimating the time taking into account the development team’s velocity updates. http://guide.agilealliance.org/guide/velocity.html
In adaptive approaches, the speed of agile teams is considered as a very important metric in planning. Finally, I end this article by adding two topics that you can consider regarding the speed of agile teams.

Lately, I would like to share my views on the most debated certifications on agile methods, depending on experience and observations.

Many different institutions around the world offer agile methods and certification programs for Scrum, the most common of these methods. We may list the most popular ones as follows.

• Project Management Institute (PMI)
• Scrum.org
• Scrum Alliance

PMI-ACP (Agile Certified Practitioner): The ACP certificate issued by PMI is a certification to consolidate and measure information on agile approaches and methods.

Although it is not quite right to say exactly which of these three institutions are more important and valid, I think ACP certification is one step ahead because of PMI’s reputation and credibility.

While the ACP certificate addresses all of the agile methods, other certifications are specific to only certain agile methods. One of the important differences that distinguish ACP certification from others is that PMI institutions seek specific prerequisites for candidates who want to be certified.

21 hours of “Agile Project Management” training from a training organization. You can enroll in this PMI ACP Training to satisfy this requirement.
2000-hour general project experience over the last 5 years
1500 hours of agile project experience in the last 3 years
An ACP certificate can be obtained by a PMI accredited testing institute with a minimum of 80% success after a 3-hour exam consisting of 120 questions (indicated by some sources even though this is not disclosed by PMI).

Unlike other certifications; The ACP certification has a 3-year validity period and PMI certificate holders are evolving themselves and bringing a certificate renewal process based on their learning.

In summary; There are basically two major reasons why PMI-ACP certification takes precedence over other certifications for professionals involved in agile methods.

PMI is given by an institution with a high level of validity and awareness.
PMI-ACP certification exams and trainings are prepared by professionals who are expert in various agile based methods (XP, Lean, Kanban, DSDM, FDD, Scrum, …). A single agile method, such as Scrum.org or the Scrum Alliance, is a non-binding certification.

It is the world-renowned, largest and most influential certification organization in the Agile community. This is the most established non-profit organization in the industry and it has been founded in the year 2001. It has certified more than 750,000 practitioners across the globe. This organization provides education, support, and resources to practitioners of Scrum and Agile.

The vision of the Scrum Alliance is to “Transform the World of Work”. Their mission is to guide and inspire individuals, leaders, and organizations with practices, principles, and values that create a joyful, prosperous and sustainable workplace.

Scrum Alliance offers various certifications categorized by Scrum and Agile Practitioner:

1. The first category is the Scrum team role and it offers the following certifications:

a. Scrum Master Track: Certified Scrum Master, Advanced Certified Scrum Master, Certified Scrum Professional- Scrum Master

b. Product Owner Track: Certified Scrum Product Owner, Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner, Certified Scrum Professional- Product Owner

What is Scrum SEU?

Scrum SEU refers to Scrum Education Units (SEUs). Scrum SEUs are required by Scrum Alliance to maintain your certification by completing education training or learning opportunities. You can earn Scrum SEU by attending the Scrum related courses, independent learning or attending other events. There are basically 4 categories which offer Scrum SEU credits. You are free to choose the category and accumulate the required amount of Scrum SEU to renew your certification.

For instance, in the case of CSM certification, you need to accumulate 20 Scrum SEU to renew your certification. Here if a person is involved in one hour of preparation or participation or webinar then he/she is entitled to 1 Scrum SEU. Hence, Scrum SEU is based on a 1:1 ratio of contact hours to points.

Ways of Earning SEUs

There are 4 following broader categories through which you can earn Scrum SEU:

1. Attending Events

You can participate in events like Scrum Alliance Global Gatherings, Scrum Alliance Regional Gatherings and Scrum Alliance sponsored events as well as user group events and activities. Scrum SEU earned in this category can be put in Category A while renewing the certification.

• Global Gatherings: These types of gatherings are conducted twice a year. You can meet people from the Scrum community and everyone shares their experience to gain knowledge. You just need to look for such type of gatherings in your location and can add Scrum SEU to your account.
• Regional Gatherings: In such type of gatherings, they generally take 2-3 days where you get a chance to meet Scrum trainers, coaches, and practitioners.
• Sponsored Events: These events are sponsored by the Scrum Alliance and provide Scrum SEU.
• Coaching Retreats: This retreat is generally for managers, product owners, Agile coaches or aspiring coaches and Scrum Masters who can connect with their peers about Agile practices so as to enhance their skills.

Further activities like presenting the topics, coaching and attending sessions are other ways to earn Scrum SEU.

2. Learning

You can earn Scrum SEU by working with Scrum Alliance CST (Certified Scrum Trainer), CECs, CTCs, and REP. Another way to learn Scrum SEU is by preparing presentations, authoring relevant books, articles or blogs. Further, you can earn Scrum SEU by watching a training video/webinar or reading a few books in depth.

You can enroll in any of the courses with Scrum Alliance REPs, CSTs and CECs courses like CSM, CSPO, A-CSM, A-CSPO, and CSD. You need to attend courses in the form of webinars, e-learning, face to face sessions or training courses offered by REP and can earn Scrum SEU credit and put in Category B while renewing your certification.

Let’s suppose you are not a social person or you don’t have time to spare after a hectic office schedule. Hence, you don’t have time to attend a seminar, training. Therefore, you can read a book and rewrite it!

Another way to share information these days with people is to write a blog, article or book. Even if you spare some time to simply watch a video will help you earn Scrum SEU which can be put in category E during the renewal of certification.

3. Volunteering

Scrum Alliance believes in giving back to the community. Hence, you can provide professional services that won’t be compensated but you will get Scrum SEU.

Here you get a chance to provide a presentation or lecture but free of cost. Actually, this is a volunteer service where you can teach and gain Scrum SEU points without any compensation. You can put them in category D while renewing the certificate. Moreover, this gives you a golden opportunity to stay connected with the Scrum community. Also, you can further share your knowledge with the fresh minds that need your support.

4. Other

You can earn Scrum SEU through a variety of other learning activities that Scrum Alliance acknowledges.

For instance:

Outside Events – Here you do not need any Scrum Alliance sponsor. You can easily participate in any outside event like Agile conferences, REP courses such as Kanban, SAFe Agilist, PMI-ACP, Agile Scrum Master, SAFe Scrum Master, and Lean or get trained from a noncertified Scrum trainer as well. Here you can put earned Scrum SEU in category C.

You can participate in collaborative learning events with Scrum practitioners and can earn a maximum of 15 Scrum SEU. Even if a non-CST will deliver the live webinar, it will also be considered that you earned Scrum SEU and afterwards you can put them in category F while renewing the certificate.

Another exception to above is that, for instance, if you are into training or coaching experience then it means that these hours of participation will be counted in your work experience rather than earned Scrum SEU.

However, there is an exception where there are 3 scenarios mentioned below of training or coaching experience that can be counted as earned Scrum SEU.

1. You have prepared or researched about the training material then it shall be counted in ‘Learning’ Category.
2. You have volunteered training for a non-profit organization other than your employer then it shall be counted in ‘Volunteering’ Category
3. Or you are a co-trainer and learning from a more experienced trainer then it shall be counted in ‘Learning’ Category.

Further, another way is the REP program which is also a means to achieve Scrum SEU. These SEUs can be applied for the renewal of certifications.

Scrum Alliance Registered Education Providers (REPs)

They are organizatiıns that deliver Continuing Education (CE) and Certified Scrum Developer (CSD) courses. These providers can be training organizations or instructors who can deliver these programs. Here Continuing Education programs are designed to enhance skills of Agile practitioners by providing additional professional development opportunities that complement the Scrum framework. Whereas the Certified Scrum Developer course offered by a REP is empowering developers and other technical-minded team members with powerful Agile skills.

Why Should I Renew My Scrum Certification from Scrum Alliance?

Prior to 2019, Scrum SEU requirement was applicable to only professional level Scrum certifications like CSP, CSP-SM, and CSP-PO. They had to earn 40 Scrum SEUs in order to renew their certification. Scrum Alliance’s requirement for renewal of a Scrum certification was to complete earning Scrum SEU every 2 years before the renewal date of Scrum certificates.

Now Scrum Alliance has changed the requirement since 4^th Feb 2019. The new renewal policy requires both foundational level i.e. CSM, CSPO or CSD and advanced level i.e. A-CSM, A-CSPO certification owners need to earn Scrum SEU to renew their Scrum Certification.

First, let us see what are the benefits of Scrum Alliance Certifications:

1. Wider applicability

• For foundation level certifications like CSM, CSPO, and CSD, you need to earn 20 Scrum SEUs. Also, you have to pay 100 USD as the renewal fee
• For advanced level certifications like A-CSM, A-CSPO, you need to earn 30 Scrum SEUs. Also, you have to pay 175 USD as renewal fee
• For professional level certifications like CSP, CSP-SM, CSM-PO, you need to earn 40 Scrum SEUs. Also, you have to pay 250 USD as renewal fee

1. Firstly you need to enroll yourself for Scrum Alliance certification such as Certified Scrum Master (CSM).

Free Scrum SEU Alternatives

But if you are a working professional then earning all Scrum SEU for free won’t be a viable option. There is no doubt you can earn a few Scrum SEU with free resources. But for filling the entire criteria of Scrum certification renewal, the best way will be to enroll in an online course and earn Scrum SEU.

However, we will list a few ways to earn free Scrum SEU for different categories:

1. Category A: Scrum Alliance Scrum Gatherings

This category has a limit of a maximum of 45 Scrum SEUs. You can earn these Scrum SEU by attending Scrum Alliance events which can be Scrum Global Gatherings, Regional Gatherings, Scrum Alliance Sponsored Events and User Group Events. Hence if you are not a working professional or a working person who can spare sometime well in advance then you can earn 20-30 Scrum SEUs in a 3-months time period easily.

2. Category B: Scrum Alliance Courses or Coachings

This category has no limitation on Scrum SEU. But SEUs can be earned by paying money.

Let’s suppose you want to be a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP), then you need to be a Certified Scrum Master (CSM) by which you can earn 16 Scrum SEUs. Further, you can attain the Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) certification training which will give you 16 Scrum SEUs. And lastly, if you go for the Certified Scrum Developer (CSD) certification then you can earn 40 Scrum SEUs. Hence if you attain all 3 certifications then you will earn 56 Scrum SEUs in total from this category alone.

However, you can get free Scrum SEU for CSP certification assuming that you have earned 16 Scrum SEUs in this category either from CSM/CSPO or CSD.

3. Category C: Outside Events

In this category, you can earn 15 Scrum SEUs. You can earn them by attending any Agile/Scrum program such as PMI-ACP, Kanban, SAFe Agilist, Advance Scrum Master, DevOps. For this, you need to look for meetups in your city for product management, DevOps meeting, etc which will not be free but chargeable at a low amount.

4. Category D: Volunteer Service

This category can give you 15 Scrum SEUs through voluntary work. For this, you need to check with the local user group community and offer your help in spreading Agile/Scrum knowledge by working with a community leader

5. Category E: Independent Learning

This category can give you 15 Scrum SEUs. You need to read 3 books and you can earn 15 Scrum SEUs free of cost.

6. Category F: Other Collaborative Learning

This category can earn you 15 Scrum SEUs. You can earn through a variety of collaborative learning activities engaged with other Scrum practitioners or you can attend a webinar and earn Scrum SEU free of cost.

10 Steps to Renew Your Scrum Alliance Certification

Let’s talk about the renewal of the most popular and demanding Scrum certification i.e. Certified Scrum Master (CSM). CSM certification credential lasts for 2 years only. Hence you need to maintain your certification to continue your CSM journey. Remember that you need to be within 6 months of your current CSM certification date.

1. The first step is to earn the required Scrum SEU in different ways explained above.
2. Then, log in to your certification account on the Scrum Alliance’s website.
3. Besides, you can confirm the number of SEU required for any certification. For that, you need to click the Scrum SEU calculator on the Scrum Alliance’s website.
4. Click on the Settings -> ‘Certification Dashboard’
5. Under my credentials, you will find ‘Manage SEUs’

Everything has its pros and cons. So below, there are my findings for Simplilearn, read it till the end.

Pros:

• You can enroll securely.

A secure payment means that the web page in which credit card numbers are entered is secured with 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption. In short, it means that the Simplilearn website protects your sensitive details!

• You can track your learning progress.

Although the focus is mostly on content creation, multimedia integration, and course organization, one of the other important aspects of developing an online course is to give students the ability to track their study activities. Because this enables the students to make the most of their online learning experience. In my opinion, Simplilearn PMP course does a good job in terms of this important feature.

• The high-quality video and audio.

What do you need to make a perfect training video? A fancy powerpoint design, good teachers, also accurate knowledge that people want to watch? Yes, but the other important elements of a good training video are the quality of the sound and the quality of the video. For me, Simplilearn has a good quality of video and audio so I can add this into the ‘Pros’ part of my review.

• Simplilearn has Android and iOS applications. You can watch the training videos on a mobile phone.

The significant increase in the number of smartphones and the integration of mobile technology in the life of the user have led the organization, businesses or any other field of education to mobile learning. That’s why E-learning providers should be more flexible for traditional and small screens. Because this makes it easier for students what they want to learn and when: they can watch a short video on the move and prefer training when they can use it at a time of need. So as Simplilearn has Android and iOS applications it checks this box in favor of flexibility.

• Online learning material is designed by experts. 

Simplilearn has all the features of good self-learning training. It is not the best one but the overall features make Simplilearn as a good training provider.

Training companies often use tests to measure candidates’ competencies for real exams. As a result, with this information, trainers can assess your level of thinking, and predict your performance in real exam. In fact, Simulation tests are used to assess how you would answer the questions you can see in real exams. In these tests, you can also be assessed on your critical thinking ability. Simulation tests serve as an evaluation tool for a lot of positions in a variety of exams. Thus, these tests can be challenging, therefore, practice is highly recommended. As Simplilearn has sample tests, it gives you the realistic experience of taking the PMP exam.

Cons:

• Cost – Performance Ratio

Cost – Performance refers to a product’s ability to deliver performance, for its price. Certainly, products with a lower price/performance are more pleasing but only if you exclude other factors. For Simplilearn, the cost – performance ratio is average. The best cost-performance ratio, as per my investigation, is Master of Project Academy. Because Master of Project Academy’s PMP Training is affordable and it has several enrollment options starting from $67. Also, Master of Project Academy’s PMP Training has a 99.6% first-time pass rate and more than 50,000 past students.

• Some videos last less than a minute. 

Although content coverage is complete, the frequent changes of videos are a little worrying. Indeed, a poorly executed video can actually harm the reputation of your brand. As 8-10 minutes of video length is the optimum duration for students, they are also easy to follow.

• Training assistance is provided by regular support staff through an online forum.

Unlike the competitors, Simplilearn does not provide any kind of tutor help or live chat for the online self-learning option. This is a problem because if you have a question about the material, instead of asking directly to a qualified instructor, you can only send it with general support via email or trust the Forum to get an answer.

• Videos could be made more entertaining.

Of course, online training offers many benefits to the trainer and the student. But student participation is the biggest challenge in video education. Today’s Internet users are waiting for most of their web content. In fact, when they get bored, they move on pretty fast. In other words, the idea is that fun education will attract people’s attention more and learn more. So, the research describes that this is true. In my opinion, Simplilearn’s PMP training doesn’t do the perfect job to keep the students focused and entertained.

• The video player has no function to increase/decrease the video streaming speed.

As technology is changing rapidly, generations are changing as well. Thus, the new generation does not like slow speaking people and does not will to show patience while there are several training options out there. So, I can count this lack of function as one of the cons of Simplilearn PMP.

• Limited money back guarantee.

Money back guarantee is only applicable to the training provided by the Simplilearn PMP Instructor. But it does not apply to Simplilearn’s online PMP exam preparation courses. Also, the warranty is only valid for participants who have paid the full registration fee.

The warranty is invalid if:

• A student didn’t participate in the PMP exam within 45 days of the end of the online classroom training.
• A participant didn’t maintain 100% presence in at least one of the 32-hour Live Online online training sessions.
• Not completing the content of e-learning. Because the full 8-hour online study is required to learn the course material.
• Participants did not receive at least 80% of the three online assessment tests offered in the PMP Exam at Simplilearn.com.
• They did not follow the instructor’s instructions, additionally, they did not complete the exercises given in the online tutorial.
• Students did not propose the required documents to Simplilearn.

Ratings

Mouthshut is India’s largest review platform. If we look at Mouthshut, Simplilearn has an average score of 4,32. Here are some positive evaluations of Simplilearn.

Good Reviews

In the above report, the reviewer rate the Simplilearn with 5 stars and she is also pleased that the training is progressing step by step. Moreover, she is pleased with the performance of the trainer. I have seen several positive comments like this. Tim Jerome is not the current tutor as I could see it is Bryan Campbell.

In the above feedback, there is another happy customer. The reviewer is happy with the PMP course and suggests others to take this course. Additionally, the reviewer mentions the high percentage of exam pass rates. Although I could not see any information on their website, when I googled for it, I could see Simplilearn PMP pass rate of 98.6%. So there is no detailed information if it is a first-time pass rate or not.

In any case, it is a very high pass rate but I have to say that I have seen better figures. I have seen better figures even as the first-time pass rate. I am all OK with the above review but the reviewer says do not look the negative comments and go ahead with Simplilearn. No, I do not agree with this suggestion, because it is not my pair of shoes  🙂

Bad Reviews

Although the overall rating is important, I usually prefer to look at the lowest ratings and look at what kind of negative feedbacks are made. I do this before every purchase, whether it is online training on Simplilearn or a $20 t-shirt on Amazon.

This review is not on PMP course, it is for another certification training of Simplilearn. But I found this feedback very important. Moreover, I have also seen similar reviews from other people. The reviewer rated the service with only one star over five. The complaint is about classroom training. The Simplilearn customer claims that she signed up for Certified Scrum Master (CSM) training, and made payment. But no venue information is shared although one week is passed. Then, the day before the class date, she claims she again asked but could not get any response. After she asked for a full refund from a live chat link SimpliLearn but she did not receive any response. If what she claims is right, maybe not for the PMP course but for Simplilearn brand it can be a big problem.

Is Simplilearn Overpricing? Really?

While going through the negative comments on a review/rating site, I have found a review certainly interesting. That review was claiming that Simplilearn is overpricing overseas candidates.

For the PMP Trainings, I wanted to check it by myself and TA-DAAA! That gentleman was right! Because the same PMP training is available all around the world, but with different prices.

For instance, self-paced PMP training is 499 USD in the United States.

But in India, the same PMP training is 8,999 Indian Rupee (INR) which is equivalent of 129 USD. So the price of PMP training for American students is almost 4 times higher than Indian students.

Furthermore, in Germany, and in other European countries, the same PMP training is 699 Euro which is equivalent to 779 USD. So the price of PMP training for European students is almost 6 times higher than Indian students.

E-commerce is growing and various pricing strategies are getting implemented. Consequently, dynamic pricing is more widely applied in various sectors including training providers. This kind of price differences (as Simplilearn does) is called price discrimination. In other words, it is selling the same product to buyer segments (geographically segmented) at different prices.

It is legal most of the time but the customers want to be treated fair. If it is local or offline then it seems OK to several people. This is often because customers do not know that they are getting different prices. But when it is online you can not keep this information private. Probably it is legal, but is it ethical?
